Finding the direction of Qiblah using the Sun and your wrist watch

Not everybody has a compass or a compass application on their phones (and we all know that phones sometimes can be troublesome or simply flat). Finding Qiblah using the old method “of sun rises in the east and sets in the west” can be inaccurate due seasonal to changes in the sun’s position relative to the earth.

An analog (normal not digital) watch can be used to locate north and south.

In the southern hemisphere, the 12 on the clock face should be pointed toward the Sun and the point halfway between the hour hand and 12 o’clock will indicate north. In the morning, halfway is in the anti-clockwise direction of 12, whilst in the afternoon its in the clockwise direction.

Qiblah, being in the NNE direction in South Africa, is slightly to the right of the halfway point (one hour to be exact on the clock face).

Insha-allah this helps and may Allah (SWT) accept all of our efforts Aameen.
