Paper For Purpose Callout 2015, Green Deen Middelburg
‒ Zakariyya Gardee, Middelburg. Mpumalanga, 2015-12-07. The past month has been significant. The first major project for Green Deen Middelburg was successfully completed ‒ Paper for Purpose! This initiative saw the team at Green Deen Middelburg collecting used paper from the Middelburg Muslim School for recycling at the local tissue factory. Recycling (the conversion of waste products into reusable material), is one of the best ways to help our environment. It helps conserve our natural, limited resources and decreases our waste. There are also financial gains to be made from recycling and this money can be used for the betterment of society.
After getting the go ahead from the principal of the school, two students from Grade 10 and 11 were tasked with all the ground work that included informing students and teachers, sticking up posters and collecting paper. There were a few hiccups – very little was collected from the older kids. A great deal of work is required to change the mindset of our Muslim Community towards the environment. Transport was also a problem, but Alhamdulillah, a solution was found and 126.5 kilograms of paper was successfully recycled. This has already seemed to have had a positive effect, as many teachers at the school have started collecting more paper for recycling.
The future for Green Deen Middelburg looks bright! Plans are being made to implement a full scale recycling project at the school inSha’Allah by the end of the first school term next year. We believe that starting with our youth is the best way to ensure a long-term future for the organisation in Middelburg as environmentally-aware children will, one day, become environmentally-aware parents biidhnillah. The organisation is small at the moment with less than ten members, so recruitment of new members is top of our agenda. As Richard Rogers once said, “The only way forward, if we are going to improve the quality of the environment, is to get everybody involved.”
